My 1st visit to the Art Gallery

Sounds dodgy...like the title to a childrens book.

Anyway...The semester's almost over and I havent even explored the whole campus yet let alone Brisbane. Thought I'd pop in and have a look and I did.

First was the lanscape paintings which I thought were wonderful. You know it's a great painting when you look at it and you feel as if you're there. Especially like those of beaches...you could say I had a bias. Trees were good too. It's so much nicer when you see them up close - every brush stroke, every contour of the hardened paint. The artists hard work right in front of you. Not like in mags where you see the prints. It's totally different. In short: loved it.

Next were the still life paintings...hmm...not my cup of tea. Who'd want to look at a bowl of fruits? I understand having I nice stretch of beach in your living room. Hmmm...I'll consider getting one for my house next time...hehe. Here I go again: no offence to people who like still life.

Ugh...modern art. Never thought of myself to be "conservative"...hehe...but I just thought they were plain weird. Blame my lack of aritstic taste then...or ignorance...whatever. One cant be expected to know or like everything..heh..

    btw, it's QUT's art gallery.

    Shameful - Disappointing

Hold contractor responsible if Sipadan damaged: MNS
    18 May, 2006

photo Kota Kinabalu: The giant barge that apparently beached and scraped off pristine corals at Sipadan's famous Dropoff Point was bringing in materials and heavy equipment to build a RM5 million tourism facility comprising a restaurant-cum-clubhouse, scuba shop, office and staff quarters, sources said.

Although well-intended to boost the island's tourism, the contractor had to first secure permission from Sabah Parks headquarters for all transportation activities for the project

Parks officials would then supervise the movement of boats and materials into the island. This is where things supposedly went wrong.

It now appears that the contractor did not have permission to bring in the barge. Even it's application to bring in a "kumpit" (small indigenous boat) was not given until 16 May, 2006.

Attempts to get the contractor concerned for comments were unsuccessful.

May 13 to May 16 were days of full moon and high tides, but by May 14, the giant barge had already arrived, the sources said.

The "disaster" happened when the barge was beached to off-load the massive cargo of gravel, sand, steel tubes, iron mesh, prime movers a large bulldozer by means of an onboard giant crane.

"If indeed true that the company had brought in the steel barge without a permit, as alleged, then the contractor should be charged for encroachment as well as for any damage caused to Sipadan," said Kadir Omar, President of Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Sabah branch.

"This is the view of Malaysian Nature Society because they have damaged a national icon, damaging the very attraction that Sipadan has to offer to the world," he said.

"The big question mark is if strict approval were needed for bringing in a small kumpit, why was such a huge monster mobilised without any permit?" Kadir asked.

Robert Lo, Managing Director of Sipadan Mabul Resort, is more pessimistic. "Not only the fantastic corals at the top of the Dropoff Point have been scraped off and flattened as seen on the Internet, but Sipadan's equally famous underwater cavern may now collapse because this giant barge is sitting right on top of it," he said.

Terence Lim, a former Dive Master Instructor with Sipadan Dive Centre, agreed with Robert Lo.

Though the cave entrance is 60ft below water, its thinnest ceiling section is probably no more than 15-ft thick between it and the island's surface.

Terence noted that this underwater cavern was the very feature that attracted late dive legend Jacques Cousteau to Sipadan.

To the left of the main chamber is a big chamber called Turtle Cavern where some turtles end up getting lost and die, leaving behind their skeletal remains.

To the right is a tunnel which spirals downwards leading to the bottom, neither too deep not too shallow - a unique feature of Sipadan loved by many divers who actually use it to train for cave diving, four at a time the most .

"It is a very beautiful cave system about 100ft deep where the ceiling rises gradually inside and is very fragile," Robert said.

"If that thin ceiling collapses, the beach will collapse and part of the island will collapse as well," Robert added.

"This is why the barge must be pulled out immediately. It is in the wrong place," he said. "Once this roof collapses, it is too late," Robert added.

"We don't even allow our paying divers to stand on corals, but here a huge barge had scraped them off and is sitting on the coral reef," lamented Robert.

    "We all feel very sad."

Terence Lim said below the big drop-off is the habitat which guarantees sighting of the spectacle of hundreds of giant humhead parrot fish which sets off to feeding from here early each morning, then swim towards Barracuda Point and around the islands reefs.

"So the Dropoff is the site where we will take our divers at 5.30am to see them come up to nibble at the coral tips before moving on and then return at night to sleep," Terence said.

"The wealth of spectacular corals at the Dropoff is the reason we see a diversity of hundreds of species of fish, large and small but much of that coral scene apparently and been scraped clean, judging from Andrea's (internet) pictures," he said.

"The Internet pictures also reveal a table coral completely covered by gravel which apparently fell from the barge ," Terance said.

'Parks not capable of looking after Sipadan'
    25 May, 2006

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Parks should be relieved of its duty of managing dive resort islands as it was found incapable of looking after Sipadan. Part Keadilan Rakyat Sabah deputy chairperson, Christina Liew, in a statement Wednesday, said the Chief Minister, being the CEO of the State, has the duty and responsibility to correct wrongs committed by government agencies and departments.

"He has ordered a full investigation, so the public is waiting to see the result of the investigation. We hope transparency is in place in this investigation," she said.

"We do not understand the rationale behind the RM5 million concrete diving resort facility for just 120 divers daily. What was wrong with the existing timber facilities? At least they are environmentally friendly," she said. "It is a gross waste of public funds and contravenes the Government's policy of conservation and protection of an environmentally sensitive area such as Sipadan.

"I hope the concrete building was approved by the Environment Department," she said.

Liew also supported Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Environment Datuk Karim Bujang's call to team up with relevant bodies who have the knowledge in the rehabilitation of the coral reefs damaged by the steel barge "by doing re-planting at the affected area".

However, she disagreed with Sabah Tourism Board Chairman Datuk Tengku Zainal Adlin, who said the damaged corals do not account for even one per cent of the total corals in the area.[FOOL in the deepest sense of the word]

"If you crack one per cent of a jewel, its value is disproportionately devalued. We are not talking about other coral reefs. We are talking about the famous Drop-off Point of one of the best diving spots in the world," she said. The government must admit that a negligent incident of a serious proportion has happened and the authority concerned must now focus on drawing up an overall development and management blueprint on the protection and conservation of Sipadan and its surrounding islands.

"If the Government is unable to manage the island, we should engage professionals to assist and transfer the technology in the management of the environment to our officials," she said, adding piecemeal work in damage control alone was not enough.

Survey: Sipadan's damaged area at 372-sq metres
    27 May, 2006

Kota Kinabalu: A survey assessing the damage on corals in Sipadan by a barge carrying construction materials revealed that the area affected was 372 square metres (3,984 square feet).

This was made available by the Director of Sabah Parks to the WWF-Malaysia's Vice President Emeritus Tengku Datuk Seri Zainal Adlin, who is also the Chairman of Sabah Tourism Board.

"The incident is most unfortunate and should not have happened. Although the damage is minimal, appropriate actions should be taken by relevant authorities against the contractor for unauthorised usage and encroachment of the barge into Sipadan," said Tengku Adlin.

He also expressed full support on the State Cabinet's decision to suspend all construction works on the island, which includes reviewing the scope and specifications of the basic facilities project.

Based on a WWF-Malaysia report published in 1993, the Sipadan reef area covers 208 hectares of the island. However, survey revealed that damages done on the reefs were less than one per cent.

Adlin said Sipadan reefs are healthy and that relatively healthy reefs can, by nature, recover rapidly when stressed or damaged. [FOOL, how rapid is rapid to you? Is a hundred years rapid? Corals don't grow overnight, FOOL]

A management plan based on sound science must be in place as soon as possible to overlook various activities on the island and its reefs.

Furthermore, an annual 'state of the reef' report to monitor corals and numbers of visitors in a year could aid the reef's assessment, highlighting management efforts and provide interested stakeholders with relevant information.

He said that managing the security aspects and biodiversity of Sipadan island are two completely different matters.

The island's security and biodiversity must be clearly delineated, said Tengku Adlin, adding that Sabah Parks needs a full mandate and proper management plan for the latter with full assistance by the Government, private sector and local community stakeholders.

WWF-Malaysia hoped that the management plan will be developed through participation and input from dive operators, divers and local communities as well as non-governmental organisations.

A transparent, participatory process will build more capacity amongst all stakeholders to help Sabah Parks manage Sipadan.

"Sipadan is a national treasure that is also highly valued by people all over the world. The minimal impact of the barge incident will probably not affect the exquisite diving on Sipadan," says WWF-Malaysia's National Programme Director, Dr Dinoysius Sharma.

    Time really really flies

wow...it's almost week 13. The last teaching week of the semester. My 1st sem in uni is almost over?!

Feels as if I just came here. It's weird really.

    OK...ethical (well, sort of) question:

If you could get extra time during an exam because you were from a "non-English speaking background" would you do it? Even if you knew u wouldn't really be disadvataged without it...but actually just 'advantaged' by it?

I knew bout it from the start but didn't really consider it. It would be like taking advatage of that system, wouldn't it?  And even if you did well so what?...no reason for you to feel proud cuz u were 'advantaged' anyway. Main point: not fair. That's just what I thought. Could be crap. But come to think of it extra time sure would help. So...what do you think?

btw, it doesn't really matter anymore cuz application period has expired.

oh...and today trying out new food didn't go so well for me. Pumpernickel Bread...UGH...the 1st thought that came to my mind when I put it in my mouth was: "Crap" (not that I know what that tastes like).  A bunch of Nutella on top didnt help either. You'll have to try it for youself to know. No offence to people who like it...or Dutch people. I think what compelled me to buy it was that I had read about it in a children's story before...don't really remember. hmmm...

    May 26

    Workers compensation?

Arrrghh...it seems like ages i've been sitting here doing this online quiz. It's not what you're thinking...not those "What celebrity personality are you". I'm being asked what sort of worker can get compensation...how much...can their spouse get compensations too...It's all bout the money. It's a good way for the uni to miss a lecture. But this is probably better, I'd die in the lecture hall if TC started lecturing about this.

Haven't been in the city for ages since i got my bike. Well...was there today. Got me some protective gear from the cold. Gloves, beanie & a sweat. I have a scarf already. Not that cold during the day lah, just at night. Anyway got them more as a precaution.

Exam's a comin'...ready or not...! I wonder how many times I'll have to say that. deja vu...I think I said that b4 the A levels too. Ah...the life of a student. Revolving around exams. O...maybe that's just me. aiks....
    May 24

    o, what a beautiful morning...o, what a beautiful day...!

When you see you lecturers in front of this huge amount of students in the lecture hall, in your mind you automatically put them on a pedestal.

We had a nice little lunch party for international students and members of the law faculty today. Wow...so cool. I talked to FMcG! And CatOS was so nice. Specially showed us where the past year questions were on on the OLT site. And she's a diver too. Yup. That's where dad's job comes in handy to impress people. haha...that's not all you're good for...don't worry...!

Hey, lecturers are human beings too.

Besides that, got feedback from my tutor bout my oral presentation. Heehee...good feedback :) Excellent powerpoints! Yes! and she scores...!!

    We live, we learn

Writing stuff here is just a lame excuse for me not to start doing next weeks contracts exercise...too bad there's nothing decently interesting on tv.

Let's see...I'm not good with smells. Maybe not food smells, but other smells. 1st there's perfume. The other day I was lazy to walk to the gardens so I just sat in the normal places where there are seats. And that's also where other people sit. And this bunch of guys sat nearby and can you believe it - there's this sickeningly-sweet smelling perfume coming from there...oh please...you're a guy! And couldn't you exercise moderation and not make everyone within a 5metre radius smell you?

Then there's smoking. Some guy was smoking and the wind sorta blew it my way. Neat. I'm not gonna say I hate it...I know too many people that smoke. I just don't like it.

Next time botanic gardens it is. I'm such an introvert...but I value my peace and quiet. No offence or anything to people who wear perfume or smoke :)

Church was kinda different today. SN gave her testimony. Kinda long, but good. It made an impact. Everything that happens in life happens for a reason. There are no wrong choices. She also said she had no regrets which I thought was pretty cool.

We also had this thing where we dropped a stone in a bowl to represent a prayer. Felt kinda bad cuz almost everyone seemed to be praying for other people...but I prayed for the Life below Sipadan. It's God's wonderful creation too, and what a shame that Man should come and destroy it. I'm sad and angry at the same time. What right do they have to destroy it?

    lost in translation

Sugary-sweet romantic love stories with happy endings are nice and all, but I don't really think they convey the real message, do you? This film is great when it comes to that point. You feel like it's telling you the truth about what it really means. No fantasies, no dreams. Sometimes honesty is the best policy...hehe

At the begining of this movie, you kinda start to think "hmmm...this is boring". But it starts to get better at about...half and hour before the end. And then you think " hey, those boring bits were important for story", y'know what I mean? oh well, doesn't matter if u don't.

Anyway I loved Scarlett Johansson in the film, not that I've seen any other movie of hers. It was just great. Probably gonna watch Match Point soon...even thought Chk seems to think it's crap. haha...
    May 18

    WHAT?!?!

What the hell is the matter with this stupid country? When will they realize that they'll never be able to take back what they've done? Shit...suhldaibdaslsgdl!! IDIOTS! No amount of money will bring it back...nothing will bring it back...

Mystery barge caused damage at Sipadan?

photo Kota Kinabalu: A giant barge has apparently flattened corals at Sipadan's legendary Dropoff Point inflicting "incalculable" damage, according to a report containing pictures of what are believed to be the damaged section posted on the Internet by Fins Magazine Associate editors Andrea and Antonella.

"I am sitting here with tears of rage and frustration in my eyes like many other fellow divers today (16 May) after having witnessed a major and unexpected man-made disaster which struck Sipadan's reefs last night," Andrea said.

"An enormous steel barge carrying thousands of tonnes of course gravel, sand, steel tubes, iron mesh, prime movers, a large bulldozer and gigantic crane - which had been incredibly allowed to anchor right in front of Sipadan's legendary dropoff before unloading its cargo on the supposedly protected island - was pushed against the reef by wind, ending up beached on the island like some monstrous whale," Andrea reported.

"In the process of being beached, the barge scraped clean thousands of years of nature's delicate work between the old pier and Barracuda Point," he claimed.

"The barge's flat hull wiped corals away·eaving in its wake hundreds of square metres of unnaturally flat limestone, and veritable wall of corals and debris piled up against the beach," they further reported.

Andrea, author of several books such as Malaysia - A Diving Guide, Malaysia - An Underwater Paradise and A Diver's Guide To Underwater Malaysia Macrolife, said he and his wife had been diving in Sabah's spectacular reefs we for the past 15 years.

"Such is the unquestionable love we feel for this country that we're planning to relocate here soon to live among Sabah's lovely wildlife," he said.

Acknowledging that accidents at sea can and do happen, Andrea said he had a few questions he wished could be answered:

Why was that enormous, slow-moving barge allowed to anchor at Sipadan?

What was it doing in the first place when divers aren't even allowed to wear gloves in order to avoid damaging fragile corals? Why are enormous quantities of building materials being unloaded on Sipadan? What is being built there? And, if anything had to be built, why not use wood, as has always been the case until now?

He said such large amounts of building material surely necessitate the cutting down of many trees and the clearing of a large swathe of the island's forest.

Where were the staff who were stationed on the island when this happened?

    Robbie!

Robbie Williams is gonna have a concert at Suncorp Stadium! OMG...it's ROBBIE WILLIAMS!

That day whilst grocery shopping in Coles Newmarket I saw this lady with really cool hair...It was like blond and cropped at the side but long at the back. It was blond...with some jet black streaks...wowow...

I miss my short hair...I know ppl usually say I miss my long hair n all, but...hai...suan liao lah...
    May 17

    YES!!

Sooo relieved and happy that it's all over with. I think I did pretty good. NZD thought so too.
No more stinky assignments! Yay...I can concentrate on exams now. NOT.

I learnt about the legal and societal implications of marriage through this. Never thought bout marriage. Law may be tiring sometimes and I used to dislike Law, Society and Justice (not anymore), but I'm glad to be learning something new everyday (well, not exactly but u get the point)...So funny...I was refered to as "Cheryl - Gay Rights Activist"...

Today on the way to uni they were giving out green coloured bibles. The same like the one I brought here except mine is blue...which looks so much better. Is the australian colour green? I know bout the green and yellow in sports. The bible actually had a map of Aust in front and the flag inside. Hehe...I get a bible on the day of my presentation...God loves me...heeehee...
Also on the way back I got a "berocca performance effervescent tablet" with lotsa vitamins and stuff. There! I may not have free coffee but I have Vitamins!

Y'know if ever I had a theme song, 'Sugar Pie, Honey Bun' would be it. The other day I was walking home listening to it and I swear I felt like Ally McBeal! If you're wondering I DID NOT dance...strutting is not dancing...hehe...

When Ally McBeal was on I never missed it. Yea...she's a funny sort of lawyer.

    May 16

    Oh no no...

Argh...oral presentation tomorrow!! Topic: Marital Status & Sexuality
Anyone care to offer their comments on that?

My role's gonna be agruing 'for' same sex marriage.
Basically my 7 minute speech can be cut down to these points:
    1. Fact that most people think it's immoral does not make it so
    2. Against it means enforcing Christian values of marriage
    3. Couples don't have to be able to "naturally procreate" to marry
    4. The law has to keep up with the changing values of society
    5. Same sex couples are legally disadvantaged
    6. it's just like when they outlawed interracial marriages

    If only I could just say 7 sentences......aiks....hope I don't screw up.
    May 15

    Oldies

I've got this sudden hankering for Oldies. Not all of course...the kind that'll be great no matter what date it is.

    1. Build me up buttercup - the archies

    2. sugar sugar - the archies

    3. Sugar pie, honey bun - the tempations

    4. everlasting love - one hit wonders

Just cant help tapping my feet when I hear these. Back to that phase I had in primary when I liked oldies. Oh...and did I mention I used to watch the Archies cartoon as a kid. Hey, I even had the comic.

But I still love new songs of course!

btw, weird that crap mail gets into my inbox...Stop it! Bad Dog! HAHA

    Xmen!!!

Commercial break for Xmen2 now. I'm such a movie buff...especially when it comes to sci-fi films! Oooo...I love Wolverine!!

Went to church today. Met a nice couple who apparently met online. Cool. And one of them called me Chezz. Or Chezza. Haha...I dunno...I just found that really amusing. And it's not Cheese chezza, it's she chezza. y'know?

I just love riding home at night. The Herston Road ride downhill is such a kick. Icy cold air...mmm....

    Cant wait for Xmen3.
    May 13

    big bird

Went jogging today. It's nice to jog alone, y'know? Gives me some 'me' time. Time to think bout stuff.

So far for the past two weekends there has been a netball competition going on in the park where I jog. Stopped to watch for awhile. Don't really get that game. Maybe it's cuz basketball rules are permanently imprinted in my head.

Today the weirdest thing happened (to me at least). There was this little turkey wondering around our garden. It was clawing at the fence as if trying to get out. Oh man...this isn't an enclosure. Silly bird. Was wondering how it would taste like....hehe....

Oh...and in the little river beside the park I saw wat looked like a pelican type of bird. So graceful on the water.

    All sorts of birds here...nice...nice...

And apparently I crushed alot of my nice sweet grapes on the way home from newmarket. What a waste of juice.
    May 12

    Realization

I just realized this is the 1st time I'm in a different time zone. HAH!

Today, GT and I spent the 2 free hours in the botanical gardens. Same spot I'd seen the kuckaburra as last time. And guess what? There it was again. Hunting. So cool. I love it that they've got such a variety of birds here. Who'd expect a peacock wandering around a uni campus? Oh...and once there was a possum too...but that's not a bird...

It's getting so cold nowadays. Playing basketball also feel cold pulak.

    May 11

    bananas

Believe it or not, I miss bananas. It used  to be only 5 or 6 per kg but now is almost 10. I used to have it with cereal. Good source of energy y'know? Anyway...now I resort to raisins and sometimes apples. I have no idea why i'm talking about my breakfast.

Was at the Newmarket shopping centre. Those people giving out free samples of fruit juice/coffee never offer any to me. Maybe cuz I don't look like someone who'll buy it.

Got a Custard tart. Reduced from 3.98 to 1.98. Mmmm...dan tat wong...

    Cyclings through parks is nice.
    May 10

    to esther

What? Lost weight? hmm..wish I had scales to know. Maybe Leng needs new specs...hehe...

Yea...stress sikit lo. When it comes to assignments. No time for other things oh!! Argh...

Maybe will see you guys when I have time to breathe....aiks....

Exam in 5 Weeks!!! It'll be here in a flash, trust me.

    Competition

Isn't that what everything is practically about?

Who's got the nicer car. Bigger house. Has the most experience. Better grades. Scores the most. Runs faster. Best figure. Highest salary. Healthier. Most exotic vacation. Gourmet food.

There's always something nicer or someone better than you at something. I guess that's one reason to work hard. Something to strive for.

But it must get tiring sometimes.

Good news is there's always someone worse off than you too. I think.

    poor dolphins

Just read in the National Geographic bout 400 bottlenose dolphins being beached, possibly because of military sonar. How sad. Had to do with decompression sickness. Never thought of that happening to animals, but of course it does as mammals breathe too.

Animals dying needlessly because of us. When does it stop.
    Have a read:
